Spaceman of Bohemia is a refreshing and enlightening read. The story introduces us to a small town Czech scientist named Jakub. He has ambitions to become the first Czech astronaut, so when the oppurtunity to take a dangerous solo trip to Venus arises, he takes it. Although he is leaving his devoted wife, Lenka, he is determined to complete this mission. As he travels through space, he discovers a possibly imaginary giant alien spider. They develop a bond after having deep conversations about life, love, and death.
This book filled me with warmth, surprise and laughter. It also made me think deeply about topics that I have never pondered before. The author, Jaroslav Kalfar, did an outstanding job telling this story. I believe that all the characters were well developed and believable. I found myself relating to Jakub and even thinking the same thoughts as him on more than one instance. At first, I was very concerned for Jakub because this was a dangerous mission and he was going alone. I grew even more concerned when his wife, Lenka, stopped communicating with him, however, I was happy when Hanus appeared. The conversations they had together were my favorite part of the book. I was delighted that Jakub wasn't as alone anymore, even if Hanus was a hallucination.
I liked every character except Lenka. I understand that she missed her husband and everything, but girl, he was going to come back in 8 months. Another reason I don't like her is because she stopped communicating with Jakub while he was alone in deep space. Jakub and the people overseeing mission made sure to make it clear to her that communicating with him on a regular basis was very important to his mental health, however she completelty disregarded that and only worried about herself and what she wanted.I don't usually read science fiction, but after this I think I will definitly give the genre another go. I am giving this book a 4 out of 5 and I would reccommend this to an audience of 18+ because there are some adult scenes (not graphic at all) and to fans of science fiction, fantasty, and space adventures or astronauts.
