My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I enjoyed this book. I read books by this author before, so going in I had high expectations and this one did not disappoint. It reminded me of Insidious and Hereditary. The story is set in Louisiana and is about a family of four. Jack, Amy, Abigail and Charlotte. All is well until they get into a car accident one night. Jack claims he saw mysterious eyes, but no one else saw them, except for his youngest daughter Charlotte. Unexplainable events start to occur and the family is forever changed.
*SPOILER ALERT*
I might be weird, but my favorite character was Charlotte (or I guess the demon inside her?). I thought Jack was your typical male main character, not that I minded that because I think it fit well with the story. It’s always the men that don’t believe their wives and call them crazy. And they are never there when you need them, when all the crazy shit is happening. All characters were well developed and the suspense scenes were written the best. I felt like I was there with the characters each time something scary happened. Each time Charlotte acted weird I was scared for the other characters.
The only problem I had was with Jack. He knew the whole time what was going on and didn’t tell Amy anything!!! I felt so bad for her. She just wanted to help her daughter and was clueless the entire time until she found out on her own. Then Jack got mad??? Like what??? How are you going to get mad when it’s your fault for just not telling her about your past? I mean okay yeah he didn’t know he murdered his parents but he remembered almost everything else. He knew he was weird. And why get a tattoo of the demon that haunts you? So weird. Other than that, I liked the ending. Long live Charlie! (I mean the demon) He doesn’t have a name, but they called him Chief like twice I think.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves horror, suspense, and stories about children acting weird.
